The 5Cs of Direct Communication™

Direct communication is the skill of expressing what needs to be communicated in a clear, respectful, and purposeful way, without adding ambiguity, confusion, or unnecessary layers.

The 5Cs of Direct Communication™ was developed by Raj Anderson (MBA, MCC), grounded in professional coaching approaches, competencies, and qualities. It draws on the ICF Core Competencies, the global standard for skilled, ethical coaching, where direct communication lives within the Communicating Effectively domain, notably Evokes Awareness and Active Listening.

What difference would focusing on direct communication make for you — personally and professionally?

Before you practice

Direct Communication — What Can Get in the Way

Reflect on your own direct communication approach, which of the below could impact your communication style.

*Please note these are the most common examples we have gathered over the years from leaders, coaches, and clients. Please disregard any that do not resonate with you personally.

Internal Dynamics

External Dynamics

After reviewing the list and what you checked — what stands out to you, and what areas would you like to work on?

Where did your relationship with being direct come from — your culture, past experiences, the leaders you watched?

Read each one, then take an honest read on yourself — how strong it is for you now, what you already do well, and what do you want to strengthen.

Put it to work

Prepare a real conversation

Choose a conversation you actually need to have — ideally one you have been putting off. Then plan how you will bring each C to it. The Cs you rated as strengths are flagged, so you can lead with them.

Describe the Direct Communication scenario you want to prepare for

Examples

  • A 1:1 with an employee to deliver feedback
  • Delivering a difficult message to a team
  • Delivering a general update (especially if brevity is a challenge or your message is often misunderstood)
  • Managing conflict with a different team
  • Influencing a client
  • Having a candid conversation with someone you are misaligned with or in conflict with
  • Resetting expectations with a peer or collaborator
  • Saying no, or pushing back on an unrealistic request
  • Re-aligning after a misunderstanding or miscommunication
