Feedback is one of a leader's most powerful tools - and one of the most commonly mishandled. When it triggers defensiveness, even accurate feedback gets rejected.Effective feedback starts with intent. People can sense whether you are trying to help them grow or simply to be right. Lead with genuine care, be specific about the behavior rather than the person, and connect the feedback to impact so the stakes are clear.Timing and dialogue matter too. Deliver feedback close to the event, in private, and invite the other person's perspective rather than delivering a verdict. The goal is not to win the conversation but to help someone see something they could not see before - and to leave them more capable, not more discouraged.
